The first official history of the deployment by British forces into southern
Afghanistan
in 2006, the book tells the story of every unit with the UK Task Force which supported
the Paras in Helmand from the RAF teams who flew the Chinooks to the medics and of
course the paratroopers themselves. It is an outstanding story of the British Army at its
best.
Having been sent to Helmand on a peace support mission they then found themselves forced
to fight the Taliban in support of the Government of Afghanistan and face some of the most
intense combat since
Korea.
No one could have predicted that the situation would be so bloody. While
training the Afghan
National Army and fighting the Taliban with a remit to deliver a stable environment, 33 members
of the UK Task Force died on the operation. Such was the level of raw combat that Cpl Bryan
Budd was
awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
Written by those who served there the book is a unique historical account and
has been produced
and published by The Pegasus Journal, the regimental journal of The Parachute Regiment and
Airborne Forces. It plots the role of the UK in southern Afghanistan and highlights the raw face-to
-face fighting that young soldiers experienced against insurgents. Working at all times in support
of the Government of Afghanistan the book includes a chapter of personal accounts in which young
soldiers speak about their experiences in meeting local Afghans, their battles with the Taliban and
their pride in doing
a job which they believe will help to deliver stability and security to local
people.
A fascinating read for anyone interested in knowing more about the British Army
in Afghanistan.
It is planned that a proportion of profits will go to Airborne Charities to
support the Regiment and
members of 3 PARA injured during the operation.
